How to improve your websites for AI visibility: highlights from our 2,000-page research

Charles Zhou·Jul 17, 2025

We analyzed over 2,000 web pages across 500 websites to understand what makes content visible to AI answer engines. The results reveal clear patterns that any brand can apply.

Finding 1: Pages with comprehensive FAQ sections are cited 2.3x more frequently by AI platforms. AI models seem to prefer pre-structured question-answer pairs that they can directly incorporate into responses.

Finding 2: Content freshness matters more than you think. Pages updated within the last 90 days are cited 1.8x more often than older content, even when the older content is more comprehensive.

Finding 3: Structured data (Schema.org markup) has a measurable impact. Pages with proper schema markup are cited 1.5x more often. The most impactful schema types are FAQ, HowTo, Article, and Product.

Finding 4: Content depth beats content breadth. AI platforms prefer comprehensive coverage of a specific topic over shallow coverage of many topics. Pages with 1,500+ words on a focused topic perform best.

Finding 5: External validation matters. Pages that are cited by other authoritative sources (academic papers, news articles, government sites) are significantly more likely to be cited by AI platforms.

Finding 6: Technical factors play a role. Pages with fast load times, clean HTML structure, and proper heading hierarchy are more likely to be crawled and cited by AI platforms.

These findings suggest a clear optimization strategy: create comprehensive, well-structured content on focused topics, keep it updated, implement proper schema markup, and build external citations through PR and content partnerships.
